For families

What to wear

New to Scouts? There's no need to rush out and buy a full uniform — come along for a few weeks first. When you're ready to be invested, here's everything you need to know about uniform, badges and group kit.

The basics

What to wear, day to day.

Each section has its own coloured top. Underneath, navy Scout trousers or shorts are ideal, but everyday comfy clothes are absolutely fine to start with.

What each section wears

The coloured top is the main thing.

All sections also wear the group necker and woggle (see below). Navy Scout trousers or shorts complete the look, but aren't essential to start with.

The three stages of uniform

How much to put on, and when.

Most of the time, comfy trousers, joggers or shorts are absolutely fine. You only need smart trousers for "Full Uniform" at parades and formal events.

Necker

Camps and activities

Just your necker with normal clothes. It's the minimum for anything Scouting, and what they'll usually wear for camps and activities.

Uniform

Normal meetings, and arriving for trips and camps

Necker plus the section top — a jumper or shirt. For regular meetings and camps, the section top can be swapped for group clothing.

Full Uniform

Special occasions like parades and award ceremonies

Necker, section top, smart trousers or skirt and smart shoes — think the school-uniform bottom half. The Scout Store sells specific uniform trousers and skirts, but borrowing from school uniform is absolutely fine.

The group necker

No need to buy the necker.

Your child will be presented with their 1st Beetley necker and woggle at their investiture, along with their Group, District, County and membership badges — so there's no need to buy these. They simply wear them with their section top.

Where to get official uniform

Official uniform.

Section sweatshirts and shirts are available from the official Scout Store online, and from some local stockists. If you're not sure what to get, just ask a leader at a session — we're always happy to help.

Help with costs: We never want cost to stop a child taking part. If uniform is tricky for any reason, have a quiet word with a leader — help is always available, no questions asked.

Group hoodies & polos

Optional group kit.

We're setting up personalised 1st Beetley hoodies and polo shirts — comfy extras with our group logo, perfect for camps, trips and chilly evenings. Details on how to order are coming soon.

Where badges go

Sewing on badges.

Every section has an official guide showing exactly where each badge is sewn — it changes a little from section to section. Use the links above for your child's section. If sewing isn't your thing, don't worry — have a word with a leader and we'll point you in the right direction.

You don't have to be Bear Grylls

Tea-makers, idea-havers, garage-rummagers — we'll find you a job that fits.

For as little or as much time as you can spare. Most of our volunteers are parents who didn't think they'd end up here either.
